“Fragrance throw” refers to the strength of the scent released by wax melts and candles. In the melting community, it is divided into two types: “hot” and “cold” throw. “Cold throw” is the fragrance emitted when the wax is at room temperature and solid, while “hot throw” is the scent released once the wax is warmed. The distinction between hot and cold throw involves both the intensity and the character of the scent.
Typically, a 1-oz wax melt in an electric warmer emits a strong fragrance for 8–12 hours, depending on factors like the type of scent, size of the melt, and whether it’s used continuously or intermittently. Several factors influence how long the scent lasts:
1. Type of Warmer Used
The temperature of the warmer affects the intensity and duration of the fragrance. A hotter warmer produces a stronger scent but for a shorter time, while a cooler warmer releases a milder scent for a longer period. Potpourri crocks can get too hot and burn out the fragrance quickly. It’s best to pair wax melts with their branded warmers as different companies use various oil-to-wax ratios requiring specific temperatures. Warmers with integrated timers are recommended to prevent wasting the fragrance.
2. Oil-to-Wax Ratio
Most candles use 1 oz of fragrance oil per 1 lb of wax, which is about a 6% concentration. The concentration of fragrance oil affects the longevity of the scent because different wax types can only bind to a certain amount of oil. Our wax melts have a higher concentration than the industry standard for a more noticeable fragrance. The size and shape of wax melts also impact their throw. While larger cubes may last longer, smaller sizes allow for better control over the scent concentration, reducing waste. We recommend using smaller, mixable shapes like our bear-shaped melts.
3. Traditional vs. Natural Fragrance
The type of oil in wax melts affects their longevity. Traditional fragrance oils are a blend of natural and synthetic compounds, designed to last longer due to their stability. Natural fragrance oils, made from essential oils and plant extracts, can be more volatile and might not last as long. 4. Storage of Wax Melts
Proper storage extends the shelf life and effectiveness of wax melts. Store them in a cool, dark place, such as a bathroom cabinet or drawer, to maintain their scent. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight as it can degrade the fragrance. Rotate your stash, placing older melts at the front to ensure they are used first.
